Iolite, the gemstone variety of the mineral Cordierite, is also known as water sapphire. The meaning of its name comes from the Greek word meaning violet. The major deposits of this gemstone are found in Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Madagascar.

In ancient times this stone was called Vikings Compass as they used it for navigational purposes, as it was able to indicate the direction of the sun on overcast days.

Iolite is the ideal stone for meditation. The indigo blue variety is a third eye stone to activate your ability to quiet your mind, slow down your thoughts, and relax.

Iolite is a birthstone for the zodiac signs of Taurus, Libra and Sagittarius. 

Iolite rates 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes them an excellent choice for bracelets and malas.
