Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral Olivine. It is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color: an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron that is contained in the crystal structure. The color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green. In rare cases, peridot may occur in a medium-dark toned, visually pure green with no secondary yellow hue or brown mask.
It is mined in the US; Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar , Norway, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
It is the birth stone for people born in August.
In ancient times, peridot was often used in magic rituals. Its popular use was as an amulet and symbol of protection to defy evil forces. In ancient Greece it was used during divination rituals. The pre-Christian Celtic priests wore this stone for protection. Peridot was popular also among the Native American Indians who used it for jewelry making.
Peridot is in the 6.5 to 7 range of hardness on the scale of hardness.
