Prehnite was the first gemstone to be named after a person. It is named after its discoverer, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn (1733-1785), a Dutch mineralogist and an early governor of the Cape of Good Hope colony.

It is also the first mineral to be described from South Africa, long before South Africa became one of the most important sources for precious and semi-precious gems.

Some of the most important deposits of Prehnite are found in Africa, especially Namibia, South Africa, and Mali. It is also mined in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Scotland, France and the United States.

Prehnite is a birthstone for Libra.

It is believed that those who wear prehnite may experience strengthened intuition. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, prehnite is best used for stimulating the third eye chakra. Physically, prehnite is often used by crystal healers for alleviating symptoms of gout, anemia and kidney problems. It also believed to be helpful for shoulder and chest pain.

Prehnite has a Mohs hardness of 6 – 6.5.
