Jasper is an opaque form of Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral Quartz. It often contains an abundance of impurities, and therefore some regard it as a rock instead of a mineral. The common red variety derives its colour mainly from iron inclusions.

It is a birthstone for Leo and also associated with the zodiac signs of Aries and Scorpio.

Red jasper is mined throughout Africa, India, China, Madagascar and Peru.

Many use Red Jasper as a calming stone and to stimulate the Root Chakra. Some Native American cultures consider Red Jasper to symbolize the blood of the Earth, making it particularly sacred.

Red Jasper is believed to be an excellent grounding stone. It is said that it can connect one deeply to the vibrations of the Earth, bringing a greater understanding of the necessity of natural event.
