Smoky quartz is a color-variety of crystalline quartz. It ranges from a light yellowish brown to a brown that is so dark that it appears to be black.

When cut as a gem, stones with an orange-brown to a reddish brown color are most sought after. The color of smoky quartz is produced when natural radiation, emitted from the surrounding rock, activates color centers around aluminum impurities within the crystalline quartz.

Smoky Quartz is found all over the world. The largest viable deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Australia, Switzerland, Scotland, and the United States.

Smoky Quartz is a birthstone for the Zodiac sign of Scorpio.
