Fun fact
Gold is very ductile and malleable. Did you know that 1oz of pure gold can be drawn and stretched out into 50 miles of gold wire?
I learned the above fact in my very first silversmithing class back in 2009 in Victoria by my teacher Judith Hirczy. We made copper stacking rings. I knew from my very first class that I was hooked and that I found my passion. Copper and your Files
We all love working with copper right? It's less expensive, perfect for practicing, looks attractive and some even believe that it helps ease the symptoms of arthritis. However we must remember how soft this non-ferrous base metal is when it comes to tool care, so always, please protect your files! I always use blackboard chalk when working with copper. Just rub a bit of chalk into the teeth of your file, this is to avoid the teeth of your beloved new file to get all clogged up. Perhaps you just came in to see us at Capilano Rock and Gem and you bought a super nice, half round Grobet file. You wanna keep that file as clean as possible, so I also recommend you use a wire brush to clean your files. Just gently yet firmly sweep your wire brush from side to side evenly over your file to remove any build up in it's teeth.
